NSF Fieldwork by the Numbers (2018-2024)

 This research reported on below was done under the NSF grant “Developing the next generation of researchers investigating Khoisan languages” (Award Abstract # 1760980). The duration of the grant was from June 1, 2018 to August 31, 2024. The grant was extended twice because of the pandemic.

The main focus of the fieldwork was Cua, a Kalahari Khoe language spoken in southeastern Botswana. But we also worked on Tshila, a closely related Kalahari Khoe language also spoken in southeastern Botswana. Both of the languages were mostly undocumented at the start of the grant. The following numbers give a bird’s eye view of what was accomplished during the duration of the grant.

1.

Cua: 5 fieldwork expeditions to Diphudhudu (2019, 2022, 2023(x2), 2024)

Tshila: 2 fieldwork expeditions to Kaudwane (2023, 2024)

Total: 7 fieldwork expeditions.

Cua: Training 4 students (2 females, 2 males) 

(2 of the students participated twice for a total of 6 student trips).

Tshila: Training 2 students (2 males) 

(1 of the students participated twice for a total of 3 student trips).

Total: Training 6 students (2 females, 4 males).

Cua: 14 native speaker consultants (7 male, 11 female).

Tshila: 12 native speaker consultants (7 male, 5 female).

Total: 25 native speaker consultants (14 male, 16 female).

Cua: 1,390 lexical items recorded and entered into FLEx.

Tshila: 1,373 lexical items recorded and entered into FLEx.

Total: 2,763 lexical items recorded and entered into FLEx.

Cua: 17,898 sound files of words and phrases.

Tshila: 9,845 sound files of words and phrases.

Total: 27,743 sound files of words and phrases.

Cua: 15 notebooks of lexicon, syntax and oral texts (1,223 pages).

Tshila: 6 notebooks of lexicon, syntax and oral texts (468 pages).

Total: 20 notebooks of lexicon, syntax and oral texts (1,691 pages).

Cua: 146 videos (15 hours 9 minutes).

Tshila: 39 videos (3 hours, 19 minutes, 90 seconds).

Total: 185 videos (18 hours, 28 minutes, 90 seconds).

Cua: 10 transcribed oral texts (18 minutes 30 seconds).

Tshila: 6 transcribed oral texts (6 minutes 55 seconds).

Total: 16 transcribed oral texts (25 minutes 15 seconds).
